The biblical teaching about families

Jesus looked at all believers as a family.

Christ emphasised mutual comfort and lone in the family.

Divorce was not allowed; man and woman are one flesh who cannot be separated (Gen 2:21-5).

Marriage in the family was not obligatory; Paul advises that if they can avoid marriage for some reasons, they should but it is good to marry than burn with passion.

The state should offer credit facilities to the family e.g. Entandikwa

Should help parents to enforce discipline in families e.g. disobedient children should be imprisoned or punished or taken to rehabilitation centres.

The family of Christ should work together in order to bring the world together / under control. They should work to bring people to God's table e.g. Paul worked with Aquilla and Priscilla for one and half years winning people for God.

In a Christian family sex abuse was strongly condemned (Lev 20: 11). Even among Romans marrying one's stepmother was forbidden.

In Peter's Epistles emphasis was put on Christian family as Godly or should be God fearing.

Re-marriage after divorce was allowed as a way of reconciliation.

Inheritance of widows was condemned in the New Testament because after death of a partner the other is free.

Adultery was punished; King David was punished for taking Uriah's wife after killing him.

Monogamy was the only accepted form of marriage relationship though in the Old Testament it was tolerated.

Women should have respect for their husbands and husbands to love their wives. In the same way children are to obey parents in the family. (1 Peter 3: 1-8)

How can a Christian influenced State promote interests and rights of a family?

The state should finance the construction of churches in order to expand on the work of God to encourage people to go and worship.

Government should set up a minimum wage adequate for the support of families.

The state should provide free education for those who are unable e.g. UPE, (universal primary education) which is compulsory.

It should support the institution of marriage where families arise and are organised.

Should develop the concept of work among families by setting up projects.

Should adhere to the demands of the church in maintaining stability in families by not supporting divorce but permanence in marriages.

Promote good family planning policies for people to have manageable families. ,. Condemn any acts of immoral behaviour and whatever estranges on the family.

Should have control over conditions of employment to the married e.g. a working man should be in touch with his family by staying together.

Should set up laws against sectarian elements in society based on religion political affiliation or social background.

Provide enough security so that people live in peace and enjoy their property / achievements.

Censor cultures which are inhuman e.g. women mutilations, sleeping with dead bodies e.g. among the Sabiny and Luo in Kenya.

The state should offer credit facilities to the family e.g. Entandiikwa.

Should help parents to enforce discipline in families e.g. disobedient children should be imprisoned or punished or taken to rehabilitation centres.
