Throughout the rest .of the first century A.D. the Christians steadily increased and spread' further into the Roman empire. Just how widespread the Church had become by the second century is shown by the records which survive of the conflict which developed between Christians who refused to make a token sacrifice to the Emperor, and the Roman authorities who expected this test of loyalty to be accepted by the subjects of the empire.
