4:1-9 and 13-20. The parable of the sower and its explanation
This very familiar
parable could also be called the parable of different kinds of soil because the
point of the story is what happens to the seed when it falls in different
places. As Jesus did not usually explain his parables, it has been suggested
that the explanation from 4: 14--20 may be the interpretation of the Church
rather than the actual words of Jesus, which may end in verse 13. What does the
parable of the sower emphasize about the Kingdom of God? The emphasis is on the
victory of God over all forms of evil which try to prevent God's rule in the
life of each individual and in the world. Some people are spiritually deaf to
the Good News, some listen but don't take it seriously, while others follow
Christ only while it remains easy to do so; but in spite of all these failures
there are many who become the people of God. This was an. important message to
Mark's readers, particularly those who were; facing discouragement. The Good
News must continue to be preached in faith, whatever kind of people the
preacher is faced with and whatever discouragements arise.
